Sydney and The Opera House

The weather here is perfect, and we’re already tanned a little bit (except Pauline, who looks like a red lobster).

We’re staying in the well-known Sydney. It’s one of the biggest cities in the South-East of Australia. It is not only a house for opera but you can also participate other kinds of concerts. The outside of the building is magnificently. We went on a visit tour, with a great guide! He told us that the architect was chosen after a contest in 1955. The winner of the competition was Jørn Utzon, a well-known Danish architect. Remarkable about all of this was that he made his design without any calculations. He took his inspiration from a sailboat, because sailing is one of his favourite sports. Aline and Pauline’s eyes lighted up by hearing this because they both adore to sail.

Whale Watching

We find it obvious that Australia is the best island to watch whales. Today we woke up early because we had to drive for some hours. We drove to Brisbane and met some amazing people. We had the chance to go on a small boat which could bring us closer to the whales. We were the only tourists on this speetboat, next to the hot captain of course ; - )

After half an hour we were in the middle of the sea and ready to watch some whales. We had to be very quiet which was harder than we thought. After five minutes, we got to see our first whale! The captain told us it was a humpback whale, a rare and very special one!

The whale jumped in the air and turned around. We gazed to the massive animal. Pauline was so excited that she suddenly jumped after the whale, which was not planned at all. Our beautiful captain immediately jumped after her to save her because this whale could have reacted agressive.

The Tjapukai Park

The next day, we woke up wanting to learn more about the Aboriginal Culture in Australia.
We decided to visit the Tjapukai Park, an Aboriginal Cultural Events park. In this park, several spots were set up to form the common habitat of an Aboriginal. Each spot lets you discover a habit of an everyday Aboriginal. The choices were: boomerang or spear throwing, hunting, using weapons, playing the didgeridoo and many more activities linked to the Aboriginal culture.

We were told to pick two activities we’d like to try today.

In the morning, we wanted to learn how to throw a spear, because none of us had ever tried it before. We started with a lot of self-confidence, because come on, throwing a spear couldn't be that tough... Well, we guess we'd never say that again after trying it for the first time.

The Great Barrier Reef

Today we left our hotel early, because we planned to go and discover the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef. At 7 o’clock in the morning the four of us met the other people who were about to enter the same boat. We figured out that we were going to spend the whole day with them so we should get to know each other. It was a family with 4 children and two other girls from our age. The family of six was also from Belgium!

Then the boat left coast and we sailed to the reef. While on the way the crew explained us how we should put on our snorkling gear. Pauline had her diving suit the other way around and the twelve of us laughed with it the whole afternoon, we were all getting along pretty well. Meanwhile they explained us how to communicate with the others while in the water, this was very amusing because they had all different signs for the different animals we could come across in the reef. When you see a turtle, for example, you had to put your two fists on each other and make cirlcles with your thumbs. This actually looks like a turtle with a bit of imagination, you should try it sometime yourself!

Two hours later we were ready to dive into the water, and explore the ocean! First Silke and Pauline had some trouble with breathing through the mask, but with a little bit of concentration they also managed to breathe and take a look under water.
